7 Reasons Why You Should Move Somewhere New
We all know what it’s like to feel totally on fire in life. Everything is going right. We’re on top of the world emotionally, physically, in our relationships, in work, in life, in all things.
We can also all relate to what it feels like to be on that struggle bus. Work is a drag, life feels a little too routine, and that light in our eyes is a little dimmer. The light at the end of the tunnel doesn’t seem so visible.
I was born, raised, and lived in Georgia for the first 26 years of my life. It was my comfort zone. Everyone I knew, my friends and family, lived in this small little piece of the world.
Most of my family and people that I grew up with are still there and I recognize the beauty in creating a community for yourself in a place you call home.
And let’s be real. It’s something you won’t always have if you decide to leave it and when you do find it, you’ll have to work really hard to build it back up again.
There are some of us out there though that were meant to fly and we have to choose one over the other: to stay or to leave.
In 2015 I was spending my days in front of a computer 8 hours a day at a job that brought me zero fulfillment. I would watch the clock and most days, the minutes felt like hours and the hours felt never-ending. And every day the question came: What was my purpose and where did this all play a role in that purpose?
Quite frankly I’ll tell you that moving around and traveling the world doesn’t necessarily help you find your purpose, but it does take part in helping you get closer to recognizing what it is you want out of this short life to make it more meaningful to you.
I had come a long way at that point in time. I had gone from waitress and bartender to a trial job at a property management company, from an hourly to salary job within one year and an opportunity to say “f___ it” and quit the job that got me there for one that valued my being more. I was progressing in life, but.. something was off.
I wanted to see more outside of my bubble. I wanted to see the world.
So in 2015, my then-boyfriend now-hubbie and I quit our jobs with savings in the bank and took off to South America with an indefinite timeline and literally zero plan aside from the hostel we would stay at in Lima, Peru for the first three nights.
Since then, we’ve traveled Latin America, moved to Saint Petersburg, Florida, left our jobs again to take a job in Italy and travel more, and then moved to a city we had never been to in Colorado, just because it felt right.
It wasn’t easy. It comes with endless logistics, adjustments, and some challenging times in between but damn it, I’d be hiding one of my greatest secrets if I didn’t scream from the mountain tops that it was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.
Ok, not literally, but more metaphorically speaking. I haven’t yet screamed this from the mountaintops of Colorado, but maybe one day I will.
Not just traveling alone, but the act of moving to a new place to live has changed my life for the better, so much so that I’m here writing about it to possibly help set off that piece of inspiration inside of you if you’ve thought about it before but something has held you back.
Maybe this will be that extra little nudge, that additional sign that it’s time.
So here’s to you. Here are 7 reasons you should explore something new and move away from your comfort zone.
1. You’ll be a tourist of your new town, and discover new things every day.
When you move to a new city, you’ll be amazed how much new is in front of you to explore. There’s a whole community out there of people. There’s a new lifestyle awaiting you. There are new restaurants, parks, coffee shops, alleys, streets, and if you’re in Colorado – mountains, to explore.
It’s all exciting and new and there is something truly refreshing about discovering new things and being the tourist of your own town.
2. You’ll meet new friends around the world and you’ll stay in touch wherever you decide to go.
Be open to new relationships and you will cross paths with people that you will keep with you for the rest of your life. Let’s be real, meeting friends as adults can be hard but it is definitely possible. We’ve been grateful to have met such amazing people in states (and other countries) that have become lifelong friends. You will too.
3. Your perspective is fresh and new. You’re in a new place with new opportunities and things to see and do.
It’s as if your inspiration and motivation is reset. There’s something about fresh surroundings that really brings something refreshing and new to the soul. You might discover things you never knew were meant to be a part of who you are, or that maybe you did know and later realize that you’d be lost without them once those parts are discovered.
For me personally, moving to Colorado has given me the opportunity to connect with mother nature in a way I never thought possible. I’m motivated to find new mountains to climb and rivers to explore every weekend the weather allows for it and it’s become a passion that I can’t imagine living without.
4. You recognize how much power you have over your own fate, destiny, and what you want out of life. You recognize the power you have to control it.
There’s something pretty powerful about leaving what you know. You’re taking a bold step to drastically changing the environment that’s comfortable to you and once you do it, you recognize that if you have the ability to pick up and start new that you have the power to do anything you choose to make reality.
5. Others will recognize your boldness and your willingness to fly.
Moving makes you interesting (even though we know you already were). It reflects that you’re open to change and you’re not afraid of it.
I’ve noticed that moving sparks conversations with strangers and gives you exciting things to talk about in that next interview. That fresh new about you makes you willing and open to more opportunity with a fresh new outlook that is recognizable. Your boldness and confidence is easily apparent to others because you have it and you’re building on it.
You’ve set expectations on what you want out of life. There’s something to be said about that and who knows what potential opportunities that can bring you.
6. You might discover hobbies or passions you never knew sparked so much life in you.
New places offer new opportunities to try different things. I loved nature before, but Colorado has opened up the world of hiking to me on an entirely new level. You never know what’s waiting out there for you until you go look for it.
7. Because, why not?
Sure, you’ll be taking a big leap and it won’t be easy, but your familiar home will always be there. The people you love and that support you will always be there too. If you want to go back that option is always there, but if you never leave? You’ll always wonder what might have happened if you did.
